Airgo chipset to provide Wi-Fi IPTV

Airgo Networks, which makes Wi-Fi chips, announced Tuesday that Caton Overseas and STMicroelectronics will use its latest generation of wireless technology to distribute video over Wi-Fi links throughout the home. Caton is a Chinese maker of set-top boxes for satellite and cable TV providers in Asia and Europe, and STMicroelectronics provides chips to set-top box manufacturers such as Siemens and Cisco Systems’ Scientific Atlanta.

Airgo has already been supplying wireless routing companies such as Linksys with high-performing Wi-Fi chips using a technology called MIMO or multiple input, multiple output, which improves Wi-Fi’s range and throughput. MIMO is currently the primary basis for next-generation Wi-Fi standard 802.11n.

Now Airgo says it has tweaked its MIMO technology to improve the throughput, range and reliability of the signal enough to deliver high-quality video. Airgo’s next-generation chips, called True MIMO Gen3, provided transmission speeds up to 240mbps when tested in Airgo’s 6,000-square-foot model home, said Dave Borison, director of marketing for Airgo. This speed is enough to transmit three high-definition TV channels, he said.

The good news is that you don’t have to run wires, but I wonder about interference if everyone has a similar setup. How many folks in your neighborhood use anything but the default channel for their Wi-Fi setups?

Linksys joins the Wi-Fi MIMO party

Cisco Systems Inc.’s Linksys division is offering new Wi-Fi hardware that offers throughput and data transfer rates that rival Fast Ethernet, albeit with proprietary technology.

The WRT54GX4 Wireless-G Broadband Router and WPC54GX4 Wireless-G PC Card are based on the third generation of MIMO (multiple-input, multiple-output) chip sets from Airgo Networks Inc. The chip sets can support data rates of up to 240M bps, with “real-world” TCP/IP throughput rates huddling around 120M bps, according to Airgo officials in Palo Alto, Calif.

“The cool thing about this generation is that it’s not just for notebooks anymore,” said Greg Raleigh, CEO of Airgo. “You can connect your desktops and do away with the Ethernet.”

You can do that with 802.11a, b, or g too, but MIMO gives you more speed (likely not noticeable in everyday use) and more range (likely very noticeable).

MIMO technology runs multiple data streams in a single channel to boost throughput to rates of up to 108M bps, which is double that of the maximum speeds of 802.11a and 802.11g. Some variant of MIMO will be at the heart of the upcoming IEEE 802.11n standard. Many enterprise-level hardware makers plan to wait for the standard before releasing a MIMO product, but ratification of that standard isn’t expected until early 2007 due to an ongoing stalemate between two competing contingents within the standard task group.

In October, a splinter group called the Enhanced Wireless Consortium announced itself and its plans to expedite the ratification of 802.11n with its own draft specification. The group includes several powerhouse players in the Wi-Fi space, including Intel Corp., Cisco, Atheros Communications Inc., Broadcom Corp. and Linksys—but not Airgo.

So Cisco/Linksys is on the opposite side of the fight from Airgo, but releases a “pre-n” product based on Airgo’s technology? Makes sense to me! See also a previous post on the 802.11n standards battle.

Here are the product pages for the router and notebook adapter. Online retail seems to be about $170 and $110 respectively. The USB adapter will not appear until 2006.

Sounds great, but there’s a fly in the ointment as Ephraim Schwartz describes at InfoWorld:

Battle lines are now being drawn over the next-generation WLAN standard, IEEE 802.11n, which promises speeds of 100Mbps and higher, as well as increased range.

Behind a seemingly innocuous announcement last week of a new wireless router from Netgear lies a major WLAN industry schism that pits the likes of Cisco, Intel, and Sony against Nokia, Texas Instruments, and Airgo Networks, the chipmaker for Netgear.

Unfortunately, the real losers in the skirmish could be enterprise customers buying nonstandard implementations of 802.11n under the mistaken belief that they will be interoperable with other products.

Vendors looking to increase ever-eroding margins on commodity 802.11a, b, and g gear have been pushing for higher speeds and a faster ratification of 802.11n. Tired of the wait, Airgo Networks designed its own 802.11n-like chip set to be used first by Netgear in its RangeMax 240 router, announced last week, which has a maximum performance of 240Mbps.

Although it is backward-compatible with 802.11a, b, and g, it is still unclear whether Airgo’s MIMO (Multiple Input, Multiple Output) Gen3 chip set will work with the actual 802.11n standard, admitted Dave Borison, director of product management at Airgo.

And to the point, Airgo is part of a industry group called WWiSE which is in competition with a group called the Enhanced Wireless Consortium (EWC), with members such as Atheros, Cisco, Intel, Symbol, and Toshiba that is developing its own version of the standard and products to match.

This isn’t particularly new news or limited to enterprise customers since “pre-n” routers are an easy consumer purchase for home Wi-Fi and have been for some time. You just have to keep compatibility in mind with all your gear until the standard gets sorted out. Those of us old enough to live through the dial-up modem standard wars are familiar with impatient manufacturers leapfrogging standards and it was worse for modems because usage was much less likely to be exclusively “in house”. What saves you in diverse environments is the backward compatibility to earlier standards. Also at some point the vendors will also start claiming upgradeability to the eventual formal standard, but it’s still too early for that with pre-n.
